PVC vs Aluminium Windows & Doors

At Element Windows & Doors, this comparison is at the heart of why we started the company — we know there’s a right solution for every home, style, and budget.

Here’s everything you need to know at a glance.

PVC (uPVC) is thermally broken by design, meaning the inside and outside of the frame are separated — preventing heat and cold transfer through the material.

To achieve similar insulation in aluminium, you need to add a thermal break inside the frame, which roughly doubles the price of a standard aluminium window.

In simple terms:
If you touch a non-thermally broken aluminium frame on a cold Wellington morning, you’ll feel the chill — just like grabbing a scaffold pole in winter. PVC and thermally broken aluminium prevent that temperature transfer, keeping your home warmer and more comfortable.

  • PVC: Available in a limited colour range (usually 3 options). Slightly bulkier frame profile, which some customers view as less sleek.
  • Aluminium: Offers a wide selection of colours and finishes. Slim sightlines provide a clean, modern architectural look.

It often comes down to balancing style preferences versus thermal performance.

We believe there’s a perfect mix of budget, aesthetics, and energy performance for every customer.

Because we install all systems — PVC, thermally broken aluminium, and standard aluminium — we can give independent, unbiased advice tailored to your project.

Double Glazing (Standard)
All our windows come double glazed as standard.
While triple glazing increases performance slightly, it also adds size, weight, and cost — and for Wellington’s temperate climate, the benefits usually don’t justify the upgrade.

Low-E Glass
Low-E (Low Emissivity) coatings are one of the best ways to boost energy efficiency.
They reflect heat back inside during winter and reduce heat gain during summer, cutting energy bills and improving comfort year-round.

Argon Gas Fill
Gas-filled glazing (typically argon gas) slows the transfer of heat and sound between the glass panes, helping maintain a stable indoor temperature.
Key benefits:

  • Warmer in winter, cooler in summer
  • Less outside noise
  • Reduced condensation and fogging

Insert Windows are a fast, affordable solution when your existing frames and flashings are still in good condition.

However, if the old frames have taken on moisture or the flashings are deteriorating, an insert may cover up a future problem. We’ve seen too many homeowners discover this the hard way.

That’s why we take an “eyes open” approach — we’ll explain the risks, show you the options, and let you decide what’s best.

“They were so helpful throughout the whole process, and I’d have no hesitation recommending them, in fact, I already have. They’ve since done work for my mother-in-law, who was really grateful for the advice and results. I also recommended them to a work colleague after they completed a project on my first home two years ago. Great tradespeople, excellent workmanship, and genuinely good people to deal with. Thanks again, Mark and the team!”

“Excellent work from the Element crew. I’ve used them for a number of jobs over the years and the work, communication and the whole process is always top notch. I can’t fault them.

I’ve recommended them to other people and again, the work has been second to none with some complex and challenging projects navigated without issue.”
